siggraph 2001 : : los angeles convention center
it's one place to be if you are a geek or involved in 3d. this year a lot of submissions from movie industry (us). also this year - more discussion on the benefits of virtual reality in mental healing, interaction between 3d medium and real life, also a few products developed with help of 3d engines. only if I could snag a pass and a plane ticket... hehe

yes i went to assembly
Ah, I have mixed reactions on these kinds
of things. On one hand you can say "hey,
this is a geekfest" On the other hand, I have
to say that it was impressive (or scary) to walk into
a stadium that is a blanket of glowing monitors, a huge
pulsating main screen, kids sleeping under their
rented tables, and the strangest alien decorations
I've ever seen.

Assembly used to be a select group of hard-core
coders who would run around passing disks off
to one another and collaborating on creative code projects.
Now its all networked, with most of the people playing
games and chatting (also watching porn). Some say
the original charm has been lost, but in general I'd say
the kids are there doing the same thing, "competing for
who kicksī ass" just the tools have changed.

John Alderman has written a book on the changing music industry, how MP3's and P2P have changed the music distribution. The first chapter in The Guardian - didn't find any reviews yet. Alderman writes regularily for Wired and Salon.com to name a few.

ICSID has always been a little mystery to me. I've read a few
newsletters, but its always seemed a little "exclusive" for me
to really understand what's going on. I'm going to visit them since
i notice that they're HQ is in helsinki. he hee :)
