history :: what is linux ?

Back in August of 1991, a student from Finland began a post to the comp.os.minix newsgroup with the words:

>Hello everybody out there using minix -
>I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't
>be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones.

The student was Linus Torvalds, and the "hobby" he spoke of eventually became what we know today as Linux.

:: if you are interested to find out more about linux and how it can work for you go here. a popular version of linux is red hat. that some of the idgrids are using.

Girls Redefined : :
We airbrush everyone, says GQ editor.
Kate Winslet's latest GQ photo shoot has raised some noise, since the not-stickshaped actress has been airbrushed slimmer in the photos. Notes from Atlanta points to this pic of Winslet - the mirror image is unairbrushed.

...and thanks [d].

Check the official Hamilton 2003 world cycling championships site and see you in October!
For design addicts, sports events are design friendly - I feel it's less about the sport and more about bringing a huge amount of people together around an event. Services, volunteers, media, local community, all sums up to be a designed systems product.

i got another junk mail message
on my cellphone today

:: to answer [j] about digifest
i went last year to digifest and i did find it interesting, informative and inspiring. at the end of the last day - there was a party with some good installations, drinks and beatz. very good presentations by the europeans involved in the festival. they seem to look at digital medium more from the perspective of art, human interaction and message. the american presenters had excellent presentations about technology, use of interrface and very well done product presentations(macromedia flash, mx, virtual guides, etc.. ) the only thing last year was the price - but they seemed to address this issue for 2003. im looking forward to go again this year. please add to the discussion / what do you think about digifest ?

[jm] wb :)

Who attended the digifest conference last year and what did you think?

[author blogs]
Writer Williams Gibson, especially famed for his novel Neuromancer, has started a weblog in which he has so far tackled various subjects per day - so it's more like a journal than a blog. Interesting stuff, though. Mainly to do with his books, but also about pets gone wild: "The physiology of catnip, though only in cats, is such that if it worked that way on humans it would be one of the most widely abused substances in the world."
Neil Gaiman is another blogging author who continues to post frequently. Recently he answered the question how a blog might influence his writing (January 8, 2003).
