laser :: is an acronym derived from "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation". a laser is a device which produces a coherent beam of light. the beam remains almost parallel for long distances and contains one or more extremely pure colours - millions of colours can be synthesised by mixing the pure colours together in a full colour laser system.

Subject: Vietnam and viruses.

You might want to check this email for a virus as it is coming from Hanoi. Yes, we are now in Vietnam. It is amazing the difference in information you get once you are outside of China. I am referring to the SARS virus. In China they had a new conference that stated they had cured the disease and that there was no need to wear a face mask or be concerned. Of course as I have stated before, watching the news in China feels like you are watching a infomercial promoting the country. All they ever talk about other than the war, is how great China is at everything. I still loved it. We took an overnight train that was supposed to be direct to Hanoi but in fact we had to change trains at two in the morning. On the Vietnamese side, all of the officials wore masks and they made us fill out a form concerning the illness. Did we have any symptoms etc?! There are a few people here with masks on but not many more than usual. Many people in Asia wear masks if they are in traffic or if they do certain jobs. There are many tourists around and things seem to be going on as per usual. I wash my hands frequently. We will get masks for the plane ride at the end of the month. What else can you do?
Our first impression of Hanoi today was quite favorable. It has the feel of a colonial city. You can sense the past french influence. Unfortunately, it is difficult to see the countryside by yourself. They want you to go on tours. Not our style. As things are winding down for this trip however, so is our resistance to doing things ourselves. The travel agents are very pushy. I am certain we will be put in a huge group and shuttled around. Baahhhhh. After a few days soaking up Hanoi we are off to Halong bay. A seriously cool place. I will report more then. Until that time, breath easy. So will we, Sean.
