:: vodka stakes | how to make
Here is my recipe:
Made by Dan @ the cottage on May 21-22-nd 2003.
Good beef meat - stake meat
The piece should be one piece about 3-4 cm thick
about 1.5 kg it will make about 8 stakes.
Pork is OK too - but beef is better, because 1 it is different 2 it performs different while preparing 3 it tastes better in this case.
Take the meat and cut it in triangles size of a hand or a bit smaller. BTW - don’t use your hand as a template while you are cutting. You only have one set of fingers and you will need them to finish the job.
Now you will need to find a thick wooden board - if you don’t have one use whatever backing. A thick wood cutting board - I like to use that - so you better do the same.
Take car jack key [Volkswagen in this case] / a bent pipe / - there is always a car around if you are “up there”. The key used to loosen the bolts on your wheels will do. Clean it nicely with soap and water. Now take some transparent foil and wrap your device in it. Leave the handle exposed for a good grip.
:: deep dish vodka
Now you need VODKA / Smirnof is good / Finlandia is what I use. Pour one shot to taste see it’s right. It should be very cold now. Vodka must come from the freezer - and has been there at least 6 hours. The bottle has to be frosted and the vodka in a semi liquid state. Take a flat bowl or a deep dish and fill it about 1/4 with vodka.
:: ready to kick the stakes now !!!
Pick up the wrench/pipe, take one triangle of meat and beat the !$^% out of it. Now, when you smash the stake, and you have a wooden board it should make a LOUD BANG. For a good measure - someone located outside the house must be able to hear you. Stop before you destroy the meat.
When you see that the object of your aggression is kinda flat (half to quarter in thick) stop the beating - and transfer remains to swim into the flat bowl - or whatever bowl you have where you poured the vodka. The meat will be very happy to absorb the vodka. Repeat this action until you run out of meat.
Now that you piled a number of stakes in the DEEP DISH VODKA bowl, you will want to add spices. Now it’s time to execute some pepper over it - so take the stakes one by one and pepper them well on both sides. You will want to add salt as well - but not too much. Put the stakes back into the vodka bowl and cover them with aluminum foil.
Time to put them (the stakes) back in the freezer. If you are at the cottage you will find something to do. Leave them there for about 15-20 mins.
Go and lie on the dock and be happy that the sun is out and that it stoped raining. When you feel the sun starts to burn is time to go back and cook it. Or to measure time - have a beer.
You can be most constructive right away - and heat up the grill. Your grill has to be clean - make sure you have enough gas to go through the experiment.
Heat the grill until you see the needle on the dial - temperature dial maxed out. This will take about 10 minutes or so. Now is time to cut the fire off (min.) and go and get the stakes from the freezer. Also, get a beer or two to keep you company - while you can get help from your hungry friends to set the table and hopefully make a salad and clean up the fruits.
:: cookin'
Cooking is simple or complicated - however you make it. Simple is - Cook 4 stakes at once - don’t use the upper tray. 2.5-5 min on each side X 4 But really you should pay attention to the grill and see what needs to be done. (depending on the area/capacity/heat/outside cond)
Get a clean dish ready to save your grilled stakes in it - you may want to use a cover (deep dish planted upside down) Ceramics are better since it keeps/dissipates the heat, so by the time you are finished with last stake you can take them right to the table and eat.
Serve with good bread and fresh garden salad. Beer of wine however you like. And fresh fruits and carbonated water or coffee at the end. You can also cook veggies on the side to serve - but I won’t go into that now.
Most important - ENJOY - and improvise, food doesn’t know what’s happening anyway :>
